This workshop is intended to provide hands-on training on methods, code and data for the processing of opportunistic sensor data (CML, PWS and SML) to derive rainfall information. Our main target groups are young researchers (PhD students, Postdocs) in the field of hydrometeorology or professionals (e.g. from meteorological service) who work with hydrometeorological sensor data.
The application form is open from 31st of May till 12th of July 2023. You can apply here. Decisions on participation will be sent on
15th 19th of July 2023.
We will have several experienced trainers on site for the hands-on sessions and additional experts for the lectures on advanced topics. The following people are contributing to the training school:
Within the COST Action OPENSENSE (CA 20136) we bring together scientists investigating different opportunistic sensors (OS), experts from weather services, and end-users of rainfall products, to build a worldwide opportunistic sensing community. We work on defining standards to allow for large-scale benchmarking of OS precipitation products and develop new methods for precipitation retrieval and coordinate the integration of opportunistic observations into traditional monitoring networks.
Based on the open datasets that we curate and software tools that we develop, we are organizing this three-day training school focused on hands-on exercises aimed for participants wanting to get to know how to process data from opportunistic rainfall sensors:
Content and concept of the workshop
We plan two days of hands-on exercises and one day in which we’ll concentrate on mini-projects. We will have the following content:
The training school will take place at the Campus of Tel Aviv University
We have blocked rooms near the campus and will manage your reservations. More info will be provided to you at the point where we confirm your participation.
Eligibility and reimbursement
Participants have to be affiliated with a COST Member country or a near-neighboring country (NNC). More details are provided on page 60 of the Annotated rules for COST Actions (link to full document). The check if your country is a COST Member country or NNC, please have a look at this map.
For confirmed participants, OPENSENSE will reimburse all costs for travel, accommodation, and daily allowance under the COST guidelines.
