Urban Transformation – Connecting Urban Sustainability Labs Conference

We live in a time of urgent and complex urban development and planning challenges. Issues such as sustainable land use and construction, the mobility transition, climate protection, biodiversity, migration, and social cohesion demand bold, innovative, and transformative approaches. It is time to rethink values, reframe goals, and redesign planning and decision-making processes to drive meaningful change.

This conference builds on the concept of transformative teaching and research, as envisioned by the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU) in 2011 in its call for a "Great Transformation" – a shift in economy, society, and culture to achieve sustainability. From foundational research to real-world laboratories and knowledge transfer, the diverse spectrum of scientific methods provides a robust toolkit to address the pressing challenges of urban transformation.

The Urban Transformation – Connecting Urban Sustainability Labs Conference brings together a global network of participants – scientists, policymakers, decision-makers, urban practitioners, and engaged citizens – to foster exchange, collaboration, and learning. National and international experts will join forces to explore transformative urban planning and development. A key focus will be on real-world laboratories, where representatives will share their experiences and reflect on the outcomes of their transdisciplinary projects.

Designed as a "learning conference", the event emphasizes the need for dialogue and collaboration between academia, practitioners, civil society, and citizens. It aims to inspire new ideas, spark innovation, and support the co-creation of solutions for cities worldwide's pressing challenges. Special sessions will provide a platform for young academics to present their research and connect with leading experts.
The thematic scope of the conference is broad, addressing key areas such as:

  • Climate Protection and Adaptation
  • Resources, Building, and Construction
  • Water and Urban Ecology
  • Mobility and Urban Space
  • Energy and Digitalization
  • Urban Governance and Planning

Join us for two days of vibrant discussions, inspiring keynotes, and hands-on exchanges on the future of urban transformation. Together, we can explore how transformative planning and innovative research can pave the way for more sustainable, livable, and resilient cities worldwide.

We look forward to welcoming you to Karlsruhe and this exciting learning, networking, and co-creation platform. Registration and Paper upload will open soon.
