Dear GK fellows and KSETA fellows,

after a successful reapplication for the Graduiertenkolleg we are eager to present you the 2015 version of the GK Doctoral Workshop in Althuette.

If you attended some discussion during the GK evaluation, there is propably no way you missed to head how well regarded the GK doctoral workshop was in previous years and how eyebrows were raised why it didn't happen in the last two years.

We are changing that and giving you the possibility to attend the workhop, which will again be held in Althuette. One of the biggest advantages of the last workshop was its small size and its focus on small groups of students explaining little topics to each other.

Travel

As Althuette is not too far away from Karlsruhe we will try to pass on a bus transfer and will travel privately by car. Please mention in the registration, if you are able to take other people with you.

Tutorials

The main time of the workshop will be spent in a "group puzzle".

For those of you, who are not familiar with this activity, I will explain the four stages it consists of:

1. Before the workshop begins, you should prepare a topic of your choice. This choice is only limited by requiring the topic to be physics related. To give you an idea, I will give you some examples: Dark matter, SUSY, superconductors, data analysis, Axions, gauge theories, ... but of course these are only examples and you are kindly invited to come up with a topic yourself.

2. & 3. The next stages are taking place at the workshop. During 2. and 3. you, as an expert, should explain your topic to the others. To do so for each of the two rounds small groups will be formed. We won't instruct you how to present your topic, so be creative. But please consider that the amount of projectors that are at our disposal is limited. Hence digital media most likely has to be shown on laptops. Since there are only small groups to be formed, that shouldn't be a problem.

4. The final part is presenting one of the newly learned topics. But don't be scared this should only be a small presentations of some few minutes.

In  these smaller groups one might feel more comfortable asking "stupid" questions leading to a real understanding of these topics.

This concept was very well recieved in the last workshop and we hope this will also be the case for this year's edition.

Invited Speakers

There will be a few invited speakers on the workshop as well. The annnouncement will follow soon.
