Call for Papers for the UERA Seminar on 22nd of February 2024
Topic of the International Seminar
The Urban Europe Research Alliance (UERA) conference 2024 focuses on urban sustainability transformations, aiming at building ecosystem learnings, through multiple experimentation, collaboration and social learning.
Urban sustainability transformations require cultural change and learning on all levels of governance and society. Responding to this need, an experimental turn has occurred since the 2000s in sustainability sciences (Parodi et al. 2023[1]), bringing into life different forms of Urban Living Labs (ULLs)/real-world labs and real-world experimentation.
Real-world experimentation is crucial in shaping knowledge to action for future sustainable and resilient cities. Especially in urban contexts, this practice enables urban actors to become more responsive to the evolving needs of citizens and framing conditions such as climate change and multiple crises. Achieving transformative capacity (Wolfram et al. 2019[2]) is essential for creating more livable and thriving cities. It is essential to create ecosystems that promote research, policy, and planning interaction, learning, and consideration of socio-economic outcomes. These ecosystems should also address governance and institutional frameworks that enable citizens to take action and become empowered. This capacity mainly involves enhancing urban agency, integrating learnings and experimentations into urban planning practice, and fostering a broader culture of sustainability in urban societies.
There are some key questions that need to be addressed in order to learn through experiments and effectively transfer those learnings into the realm of urban planning and social practices. For instance, what kind of capacities are required for ecosystem learning and how can researchers contribute to their development? Additionally, how can research and urban societies engage in long-term hybrid research and learning environments, despite facing the challenges of 'projectification'? Lastly, how can we ensure that the learnings are efficiently and sustainably transferred?
Abstracts and forms of contribution:
Contributions may consider research and practice of urban governance, diversity, inclusiveness, justice, transformative knowledge, co-creation, learning, innovation, urban collaboration, cooperation, and institutionalization of coalitions of urban actors.
We welcome abstracts (300 words) contributing to urban sustainability research and practice and the development of new skills and competencies enhancing transformative capacity. The seminar aims to contribute to the European transfer of knowledge and experience and to identify and discuss the need for capacity building in research and practice.
Besides presentations, we welcome posters that will be shown during the whole event and highlighted in a specific poster session.
Deadline for abstracts (both for presentations and posters): 12th of January 2024 (final deadline!)
The UERA seminar is considered an open platform for researchers to connect on the topic of sustainable urban transition in broad terms. It welcomes researchers to share and disseminate their results dealing with questions of sustainable urban transitions, energy transitions, mobility transitions - 15-minute city, accessibility, and connectivity - and regenerative circular urban economies and processes.
Final papers can be published after the conference in the Special Issue of the Journal Urban Transformations ‘On the Other Side of the Green City: Critical Experimentations and Learnings’ (submission will be opened after the conference)
Research findings and the collection of the papers will contribute to exchange, sharing and expanding knowledge and practical examples for creating a positive planetary sustainable urban development in the EU countries and beyond.
