Description

CP violation in quarks and leptons (including axions and ALPs)

Prof. Dr. Belén Gavela (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid)

Abstract

This course will start by reviewing the basic concepts of fermion mass and CP-odd couplings in the SM for quarks, and also for leptons in presence of neutrino masses. The aim is to gain physical —intuitive-- insight on the meaning and properties of CP violation, and its experimental/observational implications.  After exploring the electroweak sources of CP violation for quarks and leptons, the ``strong CP problem'' of the SM will be formulated.  The axion solution(s) will be developed next, as well as the concept of ALP (axion-like-particles). Recent theoretical developments will be finally discussed in the context of the tantalising experimental prospects tackling axions and/or ALPs.
